SIR,—As a member of the 'affluent working class' living in
the 'enormous council flats' surrounding your correspondent Mrs. Hime of Roehampton, I would like to bring two points to her notice.
Firstly, the 'cars and children's pocket money' to which she refers are, in the main, acquired by Dad doing a good deal of overtime or by Mum going out to work. This hardly bears out Mrs. Hime's charge of the 'enormous increase in wages for less work done.'
Secondly, many council tenants now think of themselves as 'middle' rather than 'working class.' This is understandable. The adroit propaganda emitted from the Conservative Central Office over the last years has been directed to this end.
I found it very salutary to be put so firmly in my place and to learn how we are really regarded by the rank-and-file Conservative.
