Afterthought
Sir: I have only just seen John Wells's article in your issue of 12 May. As a journalist, I know too well how desperate one can become for some- thing to write about, but I am sorry to see a young man so well known for his aspirations to sophistication so much out of his depth.
As he is evidently unacquainted with the cost of a meal that proceeds from foie gras to peaches flamed in brandy, I am enclosing a cheque for Mr Wells to help defray this unexpected expense. I hope he will accept it; as he seems to think that all my own food and drink is paid for by the Sunday Times he need not worry about whether I can afford to make this small gesture of good will.
Margaret Costa Thomson House, 200 Gray's Inn Road, London WCI John Wells writes: I have taken the liberty of send- ing Mrs Costa's cheque to a sophisticated charity of my choice, viz., the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief.
