Native wit

Sir: I was reminded by Carl Hartley's letter headed 'Native Africans' (7 November) of a Zambian acquaintance telling me that when, as a young man, he went to study in what was then Southern Rhodesia, the authorities there issued him with an identi- ty document in which he was described as a `non-indigenous native'.
