No comrades in arms
From Jonathan Mirsky Sir: Not for the first time Taki (High life, 12 June) praises Hitler's generals, in this case saying that 'if that moron Hitler had listened to von Rundstedt [on D-Day] . . , I am convinced the Wehrmacht would have held'. He adds that the Allies had 'overwhelming advantage' as if it were unfair. So if Hitler hadn't been a moron and the Allies hadn't had an advantage, then what? The invasion would have failed? And?
This Welirmacht was a Nazi army bent on world domination and the extermination of all opponents. It wasn't defending its homeland when it sang 'We're marching to England'. These were the bad guys and, dead or not, it is perverse to say, as Taki does, 'all soldiers, especially the dead, are comrades in arms'.
