From Mr Peter Armstrong Sir: Another foreign VC was won
by Lieu- tenant Thomas Dinesen, a Dane serving with the Canadian Black Watch, in 1918. Until this award, his sister, Karen, who had emigrated to Kenya in 1913, was treated with suspicion by the local settlers on account of her prewar acquaintance with Paul Von Lettow Vorbeck, the legendary German East African commander. After both her marriage, to Bror Blixen, and her coffee farm collapsed, Karen returned to Denmark and wrote Out of Africa.
