Canetti lives
Sir: I know it must appear churlish to complain about the Spectator's coverage of our two books by Canetti: The Human Province reviewed by Paul Theroux last 30 November and Colin Welch's long piece last week on The Conscience Of Words, since no other British journal has given so much space and elegant attention to this great writer. But, complain we must, since at the beginning of his review Mr Welch causes Canetti to die in Hampstead and repeats the death in the summing up. Pace Mr Welch I am happy to inform Spectator readers that Elias Canetti is, at 80, alive and well and living and writing in Zurich.
