Sir Hugh Purees Campbell was clecZed Member for I3envickshire on the 13th instant ; aid in his address to his constituents, declared his determination to pursue a perfectly independent Parliamentary course.

lie was resolved to support every measure of retrenchment consistent with the dignity of the Crown and the efficiency of the public service. He would vote fl,r every reduction of taxation wh;ch could be made without breach of faith with the public eroli.or. Ile was a sincere advocate for the blessings of peace. He also " trusted that we should rever again league with our ncieral enemy for the oppression of our oldest and best ally." From this we suspect that Sir Hugh is li,tle betier than a simpleton after all.

It is reported that Mr. CI-awful(' of Auchenames, a man of the highest character and abilities, and of liberal principles, who has been for the last seven years Treasurer-General of the Ionian Islands, in- tends to offer himself as representative in Parliaineut for the Ayr dis- trict of burghs.
