Evidence invited
Sir: I am writing, as chairman of the Royal Commission on Criminal Procedure in England and Wales, to ask for the help of your readers in our work.
The task which we have before us is one of great complexity but also of much importance for modern society. We have to review the powers of the police in the investigation of crime, the rights of suspects and accused and the nature of the prosecution System in England and Wales. At a time When the level of reported crime continues to rise few issues are of greater social significance than finding a proper balance between the interest of the community as a Whole in bringing offenders to justice and the protection of the rights and liberties of the citizen as an individual.
I am sure that these are matters upon Which many of your readers will have views. My colleagues and I would be glad to receive evidence in writing on any subject Which falls within our terms of reference.
