NEWS OF THE WEEK.
WE regret most deeply to announce the death of "George Eliot "—Mrs. Cross—which occurred on the might of Wednesday, from pericarditis. The death was an- nounced too late for any comments of ours, but England and the world have sustained a severe intellectual loss. A hundred sears hence, we believe, biographers will notice that the greatest man and the greatest woman who have appeared in English literature were both from the "Midlands."
