Invisible exporters
TWO INSURANCE brokers, one firm of lawyers, and my friends at Euromoney Pub- lications, suppliers of glossy supplements to the world: these are the City's winners of the Queen's Award for exports — four, out of 127. That is four more than in some years, but still a poor recognition of our most successful exporters, good for a billion pounds a month on the balance of pay- ments. The lopsided picture is the one the public sees, and affects policy, for instance on support for exporters. British Invisibles, whose cause this is, should promote City candidates. If they need help, they can always ask Euromoney, which in its 23 years of existence has now won the award three times.
