Max's Di a wings

Sir: Mr Ferdinand Mount, in his review of Letters of Max Beerbohm (27 August), writes, 'Nor are the drawings always clear ur closely related to the relevant letters.' Some of the drawings ale indeed a trifle faint because Max used a faint pencil, but, except for the froniispieee, every other drawing is either included in the relevant letter or reproduced next to it. Perhaps Mr Mount only dipped into the book. And if Max's letters and my cot te.,pondence with George Lyttelton make him want to smash china, there are surely plenty of China- shops in which he could convincingly play the Bull.
