THE LADDER OF LEARNING.

SIR,—Referring to your article, "The Ladder of Learning," in the Spectator of Jane 17th, it may be of interest to note the first-fruits of the much-abused new scheme for Christ's Hospital, so far as preparation for the Universities is con- cerned. We have here to-day ten youths who, within the last year, have won open scholarships or exhibitions at Oxford or Cambridge. Of these, two belong to our old Foundation, one gained admission from a public elementary school, and seven obtained their places as competitors from endowed schools. I often wish that Managers of Church schools within the London district and Governors and Masters of the less well endowed grammar schools understood better the oppor- tunities now given both to boys and girls for admission to this Foundation.—I am, Sir, &c., RICHARD LEE,
