The State trial at Sofia, which has lasted for many
days, ended on Tuesday in the following sentences being found by
the Court :—Swetoslaw Milaroff, Constantin Popoff, Toma. Gheorghieff, and Alexander Karaguloff, were condemned ter death ; Lieutenant Vassilieff, Stoju Djudjoff, and Ivan Bobekoff were sentenced to nine years' imprisonment ; Dimitri Staicoff, to sixteen months' imprisonment ; Spas Lepavtzoff was con- demned to death, but this has been commuted to five years" imprisonment ; Petko Karaveloff, the former Regent and Minister, to five years' imprisonment ; Traiko Kitantcheff, to three years' imprisonment ; Ghorghi Velikoff, to fifteen years' imprisonment. The following were acquitted :—Grigor Kara- guloff, Petre Makedonski, Dimitri Molloff, Dimitri Karasto- janoff, Dimitri Nojaroff, and Petre Milkoff. M. Karaveloff, who, it will be remembered, was one of the Regents appointed. after the deposition of Prince Alexander, made a speech in his own defence, in which he declared that he did not want to subject Bulgaria to Russia, but desired an alliance with Turkey. As to whether the prisoners ought to have been con- demned, it is very difficult to say ; but if we are to believe the correspondents, the trial was fairly conducted. One thing is clear, when M. Stambonloff strikes, he strikes hard.
