THE INTRODUCTION OF GOLF INTO THE UNITED STATES.
[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] Sra,—In the Spectator for February 2nd, the writer of a letter on " The Introduction of Golf into the United States" asked for some light on the Dutch words used in certain South Carolina records dated 1788 and 1790. Colf or Kolfbaan is certainly Dutch. Kolf corresponds to golf, but stands for the club used ; baan means the ground on which it was played —Kolf-baan thus is golf-ground.—I am, Sir, &c., A DUTCH READER OF THE " SPECTATOR."
