We are glad to record that Judge Beaumont, who was
appointed by the Natal Government to inquire into the charges of inhumanity against Royston's Horse, has in his
Report acquitted that corps and found the allegations not proven. The allegations, it will, be remembered, were made by the Bishop of Zululand, and the Natal Government, instead of disregarding or categorically denying them, very wisely ordered a full investigation by an impartial tribunaL Judge Beaument, while finding the charges unsubstantiated, evidently considered that the Bishop had good prima-facie grounds for making them, and recorded his opinion that he acted rightly in laying his information before the Government. It is well that the matter should have been so promptly and satisfac- torily settled, for reports of inhumanity, if left uncontradicted, are apt to grow into a formidable tradition.
