The Austrian Budget was produced on November 18, and showed
an expenditure of £38,730,000 against a revenue of £38,980,000, leaving a small surplus ; but as the telegraphic report includes a sale of Rentes in revenue, all that we can say about it is, that the Finance Minister hopes to make both ends meet in 1874. The Prussian Budget, on the other hand, reeks with prosperity. The revenue for 1874 is estimated at £34,754,000, and the expenditure at the same sum, although large increases are made in the Ministries of Justice, Public Worship, and Commerce. The Government had a surplus of £180,000 in hand for last year, and had paid off £12,000,000 of Debt. The telegram is not quite clear, but there can be little doubt that Prussia as a State is very well to do. Whether as much can be said for her subjects is the point which has still to be determined.
