There is still very little news from the Dardanelles. We

have, however, Lord Kitchener's assurance, and also that of an official telegram published on Wednesday, that we are making good our positions and gradually gaining ground. What seems to have happened is that our landing, one of the greatest military feats ever accomplished, cost us very dearly indeed. The power of the Turks to fight behind entrench. merge and our terrible losses have rendered the making good of our position in the Peninsula very slow work. We are, however, beginning to straighten out the tangle and to clear the Peninsula by the joint action of the Fleet and the Army.
