SIR,—Every year thousands of people come to Britain and face up to the special discomforts of a rail trans- port system with the Beeching death-wish now fully built-in. Familiar though the inhabitants of this sceptred isle may be with the dirty coaches, high-cost low-quality restaurant-car meals, etc, etc., to the unfortunate 'alien' BR often comes as a nasty surprise.
For a friend of mine the inconvenience started before he left his home in Paris. He wrote to the BR office in Boulevard de la Madeleine for information regarding cross-Channel steamers, and received in reply i flowery letter covering the enclosure of leaflets printed, so help me, in English. He sent the leaflets to me for translation, saying of BR 'clue leur publicite West pas explicite.'
Need I add that a letter bringing the incident to the attention of BR's 'Representant Gendral pour la France' was ignored, so my indignation seeks an outlet in your columns.
