The by-election at Carlisle, the result of which was announced

last Saturday, resulted in the return of Mr. Chance, the Free-trade candidate, by a majority of 1,030. At the last General Election at which the Liberal party were victorious—that of 1892—the majority at Carlisle was 143. These figures speak for themselves.
