More gas and gaiters

Sir: In his article 'More gas and gaiters' (15 August) Mr Peter Paterson, explaining the filling of episcopal vacancies, writes of 'Filling vacancies for suffragan (assistant) bishops'. Whilst it is true that a suffragan does assist the bishop, he is by no means the same as an assistant bishop.

Later in his article Mr Paterson writes 'His Grace of Oxford'. So far as I am aware there are only two Anglican Archbishops namely Canterbury and York.

Sir: Having no aspirations to gaiters I can safely say in my naturally gassy way that the article by Peter Paterson (15 August) is the most amusing and informed on the sub- ject that I have read for many a long day.
