Why Pay Cash?

SIR,—Leslie Adrian is too naive when he asks 'Why pay cash?' when account customers pay no more than cash customers at department stores. The managers of such stores are realists and know that whereas the spending power of cash customers is limited by the depths of their pockets. account cus- tomers are bound by no such prudent restriction. Further, but for the alluring credit facilities, the urge to spend would often be resisted and some pur- chases might then not be made at all.

The present staggering national hire-purchase debt figure and the enormous increase in credit trading is an indication of the extent to which our people are determined to have more things than they can afford to pay for. it is hardly surprising that national, and in many cases personal, near-bankruptcy results.
