Sir: It is fortunate that the English are civilised enough

to take their nationality for granted. Occasionally they may be annoyed.

A short time ago, in a television educational discussion largely devoted to immigrant chil- dren in the Midland cities, the only time the word 'English' was used was about language.

English schoolchildren, born and bred in the heart of England, Shakespeare's country, were called 'the European children'!

How would Mr Bennett (Letters, 14 March) like this if it had happened in Scotland?
