The papers received by the last packet from New York contain some carious particulars relative to the attempted assassination of General Jackson. In consequence of a correspondence between Mr. Dutee J. Pearce, and Mr. George Poindexter, the latter had made a communi- cation to the Senate, and upon his request a committee of five had been appointed, with power to send for persons and papers, to inquire into assertions made by Mr. Pearce ; that he bad seen in the President's possession three affidavits which represent that Lawrence (the assassin) had been seen in the private room of Mr. Poindexter, some days before the attack on the life of the President. The committee to inquire into this extraordinary charge consists of two supporters of the Adminis- tration and three opponents. The substance of the charge is, that Mr. Poindexter wits accessory to the diabolical act of Lawrence. The singularity of this investigation against a prominent member of the Senate is, that the charge originates from the President himself, who has examined the three witnesses.
