Mr. Courtney, the Chairman of Committees, disallowed the Closure at
half-past 7, but intimated that, if members of the minority hung back from taking part in the debate, they could not complain of him for allowing the Closure after they had in this way wasted their opportunities. Later in the evening, Mr. Ritchie moved the Closure, which was carried by a majority of 41 votes (279 to 238) ; and then Mr. A. Acland's amendment was rejected by a majority of 32 (275 to 243).
