One for the price of two
Sir: I see from Anthony Howard's Diary (31 March) that London Transport have now caught on to the how-to-double-your- profit-in-one-go principle. This is something the fashion industry cottoned on to a few years ago. Suddenly `Gnasher, why's it called being inside?' you no longer found suits on the rails, but `co-ordinating' skirts and jackets — each priced at what a suit used to cost. There are fewer and fewer dresses, more skirts and blouses.
I'm just waiting for the shoe industry to discover this interesting unit selling. One foot slightly larger than the other 'No problem, madam, one shoe for each foot' . . . at the price of a pair, each shoe. You could extend it to almost every consumer area; most electrical appliances are sold in. this country with the plug at extra cost. Theatre managements could do a roaring trade in seats per Act. I could go on. I could expand this letter into an article. In weekly parts.
