The Road of Excess
The city of Munich has long been associated with excess. From the extravagance of its architecture in the eighteenth century to the lunatic extremes of Ludwig II in the nineteenth ; from the rise of the Nazis to the lavishness of this year's Olympiad.
Next Tuesday on ITV, Thames Television presents a 75-minute film by John Morgan and Jolyon Wimhurst which looks at the city, its people, its history, its architecture and its music. A city which has provided the world with prototype s for revolution on both Right and Left.
With original and historic film material, dramatised reconstructions of key events, and interviews with people who have good reason to remember the city, the film shows how Munich's tolerance of excess created the atmosphere in which Hitler was able to come to power.
It is an aspect of Munich that few will consider as they visit the city for this year's Games. For, as the film shows, the post-war planners have taken good care to rebuild the city in its antique style. As if the worst had never happened.
