Tim obvious possibilities of broadcasting as a friendly rival to journalism have never been fully exploited by the B.B.C. Professors have the monopoly of the microphone z. lectures, rather than With, are still the order of the day. Yet broad- casting, as a medium for the conveyance of thought, is essentially impermanent. The omission is all the more glaring when one remembers how, from the very beginning, the " running commentary " (which is, after all, reporting in its most immediate form) has been among the most popular features in the broadcast programmes.
