One of the worst examples of indirect encouragement recently given
to murderers was the comment of Bishop Fogarty that the outrage committed against Mr. O'Brien's shooting party was only done for fun, or, to use his exact reported words, that it was "an ugly joke." The joke consisted in dangerously wounding several members of the party. Mr. O'Brien's own life was saved only by his leather-lined greatcoat, which was afterwards found to have 200 shot-holes in it.
