SIR,—I have seen the letter appearing over the nom de-plume
'Graduate' which appeared in your issue of April 13.
Your correspondent purported to show, amongst other things, that the cost per student at Readitig was far higher than elsewhere but, in arriving at his con- clusions, no allowance was made for special factors which, in varying degrees, affect each institution. In the case of Reading, the expenditure includes that relating to the National Institute for Research in Dairying, the Provincial Agricultural' Economics Service, as well as that on account of sponsored re- search projects. But, if these items were to be eliminated, I am, of the opinion that the cost per student at Reading would not be greatly different from the average for other universities.
