The stoppage of the British trade at Canton was also

announced in our second edition last week. The pretences for this interrup- tion were the arrival of British vessels, said to contain opium, and the dealings of an Englishman, Mr. INNES, in that prohibited article. There had been a riot in Canton, in consequence of the execution, by strangling, of a Chinese who kept an opium-mold; shop ; but the consequences were not serious. A long one! spondence had passed between the Governor of Canton and Alt ELLIOTT, at the head of the British Factory ; and, from the latest accounts, it would seem that the trade had been restored to its former footing.
