Home truths on the campus
Sir : Congratulations on the articles by Ian MacGregor (a nom de plume? *) in your issues of 18 and 25 October; the views of university lecturers have recently been remarkably under- represented in the press and on radio. Students whose main claim to fame is that they organ- ised a brawl at the LSE, or Vice-Chancellors who have introduced systems in their univer- sities that have failed miserably, are .given all the facilities of the mass media, but not the people who do most of the teaching.
In the universities themselves, the status of lecturers is lower than that of any comparably large group of teachers in any other university system with which I am familiar. Anyone who has taught in American or Canadian universities is struck by the quite different atmosphere there. A different structure produces far more of a team spirit in departments, and this is as strong an incentive to emigration as mere financial considerations.
