THE CAMBRIDGE PROPOSAL.

[To THE EDITOR OP THE "SPECTATOR."] is interesting to recall the fact that the first meeting to start the Volunteer movement at the latter end of the 'fifties was held at the University of Cambridge. I was present at that meeting. The question as to the legality of -undergraduates bearing arms was, I believe, the only reason why it was not the first corps to be started in England.—I am,
