Hole in one

Sir: 'Whoever heard of a queer golfer?' Mr Paul Johnson asks (Another voice, 17 June). One answer that comes to mind is Terence Rattigan, fine playwright and fine player at Sunningdale (not to mention gal- lant wartime airman). No doubt others can make up a foursome.

Elsewhere in his denunciation of inverts in the infantry Mr Johnson invokes the name of Evelyn Waugh. But it was Waugh who, on hearing that Lady Diana Cooper had been roughed up by burglars, wrote to another friend to suggest that women like Diana should be protected by 'a Praetorian Guard of Pansies (we all know from the war how brave they are)'.

Come to think of it, that might be the answer to the present problem. If such a Guards regiment were raised, might it draw on Mr Johnson's own military experience and knowledge?
