The Layman's Breviary ; or, Meditations for Every Day in
the Year. From the German of Leopold Schafer. By C. T. Brooks. (Triibner and Co.)—We learn from the translator that the original work has gone through twelve editions in Germany. The contents, as we read them now, do not account for this popularity. There are some striking thoughts and pleasing images among the shorter pieces, but the want of terseness and concentration deprives the verse of that charm which we cannot forego, and the whole string of meditations produces the effect of sameness.
