Sir: May I offer a trifling correction to Sir Denis Brogan's 'Table talk' of 18 July? The Scottish judge he refers to was indeed the son (the eighth son) of an eighteenth century Sir James Fergusson of Kilkerran, but his judicial style was Lord Harmand, not Lord Kilkerran. He was, I believe, better known for his devotion to Bacchus than for his mastery of the law. The anecdote Sir Denis recounts can be found in greater detail and broader Scots in Lord Cockburn's Memorials of His Time.
