The Afrikaans language
Sir: Mr Jenner's letter about Afrikaans (25 July) is unjust both to South Africa House and, by implication, to my organisation. Here at Language Studies we have a full pro- gramme of evening classes in the language along with facilities for private tuition. Many of our students are referred to us by the Embassy who seem anxious to make intending immigrants understand the value of knowing Afrikaans. As one of their staff put it to me recently, you can get by in South Africa without it, but it's difficult to get on.
