Profits in Cowardice
Sta,—All credit to David Rees for his careful reading of Rovere (page 377. SPECTATOR, March 25, 1966).. It It was indeed my old friend Tommy McIntyre who 'put the real muscle into Senator Potter during the Army-McCarthy hearings. (For his spine-stiffening efforts, McIntyre was fired upon the insistence of Potter's political patron. Arthur E. Summerfield.) But why 'the shadowy Tommy McIntyre'? McIntyre went on to more rewarding pursuits. He discovered and managed Jerome Kavanaugh in his first, successful campaign for Mayor of Detroit. in two successive Michigan gubernatorial campaigns, McIntyre was a sagacious adviser to the winner, George Romney.
McIntyre is certainly a character, but shadowy? Not the McIntyre I have known and cherised for more years than I care to count.
