LORD SHAFTESBURY AND THE C.O.S.

Sia,—It may interest your readers to know that the great and good Lord Shaftesbury, when presiding at an annual meeting of the C.O.S. in the 'eighties, said: " If all the charities of our great city here were administered by the C.O.S. there would be practically no poverty in London." Lord Shaftes- bury's life was given up to good works for his fellow-men.—I
