On Friday week Russia sent to China an ultimatum .
demanding assent within three days to the six points of the Russian Note of February 16th, concerning trade in Mongolia and the New Dominion. China immediately gave the required assurances, knowing that she was powerless to resist, and, no doubt, finding that the familiar policy of delay was of no further use. Though the Chinese Government gives way in principle and accepts the Russian interpretation of the Treaty of 1881, there are numerous points of dispute in which the Wai-wu-pu may, perhaps, still find opportunities for delay. The Tines correspondent, telegraphing on Tuesday from Pekin, said that the Chinese reply was comprehensive and apologetic, and removed "all pretext for Russian reprisals," but that there was, nevertheless, an uneasy feeling that Russia , is bent on punishing China in any case.
