DR. GAVIN'S DEATH.
Edinburgh, 37 Montague Street, 17th May 1855. Sin—In the Times of the 15th there is an article, said to be copied from the Spectator, on the death of my eldest son, Dr. Hector Gavin, which gays —" It was the brother's finger that accidentally touched the trigger!" I refer you to the official account in the Scotsman of the 9th instant, which contains the only authentic account of the event yet in this country, and which completely refutes this paragraph ; which I beg you will, in justice to my son William and to me, correct, by withdrawing the paragraph com- plained of; and which I do say I am surprised should ever have been printed on the 15th instant, after the official statement of the 9th in the .6'cofetnats and other Edinburgh newspapers. [We did not see the account in the Scotsman, but referred to the lament- able incident as it was related to us on what appeared to be good authority. It was understood that the accident occurred while Dr. Gavin and his brother were exchanging their pistols ; and from that circumstance it did not seem improbable that Dr. Gavin should be holding the barrel of the one pointed towards himself. However, we have no disposition to raise any question with Dr. Gavin's father, but willingly accept his denial as the authenticated account. —En.]
