SIR,--1 must protest most strongly at your churlish and offensive
comment on Mr. Mark Goulden's admirable letter in last week's issue of the Spectator. It was quite unworthy of the editor of a periodical with such a long and justly respected history. Your remark would seem to suggest that you are un- aware of the very real difference between arrogance and proper pride in belonging to a race to whom the world for so many years owed the pax britannica, and so much else. I have written to Mr. Goulden to congratulate him on his splendid reply to the 'bitchy' remarks of your Bonn correspondent.
