The by-election campaign in North Southwark, where Mr. Haden . Guest,
having resigned from the Labour Party, is standing as an independent candidate, has begUn furiously. The Socialists have been guilty of organized interruption—which gives point to Mr. Guest's pleas for constitutionalism. In his election address he explained that he had resigned from the Labour Party, partly because the Labour policy in China would have abandoned our fellow-citizens in Shanghai to all the dangers of riot and murder, and partly because the party had allowed itself to be dominated by the extremists, whoSe object was " to break up the Empire." He, for his part, wanted to help the people of Southwark to " a better life and more prosperous times " by means of friendly co-operation in industry and social reform. He is convinced, as we arc, that the true solution is the combination of high production and high wages. The Unionist candidate generously stood aside to make room for Mr. Guest, who, we sincerely hope, will be elected.
