Journey without cocktails?

Sir: I am puzzled by John Mortimer's reference, in his interview with Graham Greene (14 June), which I have just seen, to a small cocktail shaker which Greene had custom-made for him by Asprey's to take to the Vietnam war. I too was amused by this shaker when I met Mr Greene in Antibes four years ago, but then I clearly understood that Asprey's made it, not in the early Fifties, but the mid-Thirties, so that Greene might take it with him on his Journey Without Maps to Liberia. And yet, although Journey Without Maps contains references to whiskey, there are none to cocktails or cocktail shakers. Perhaps Mr Greene might check the silver mark on the shaker to clear up this deep problem of Greenian scholarship.
