One of the leading young British masters, twenty year old Raymond Keene, has just produced his first book, Flank Openings (B.C.M. Ltd, 9 Market Street, St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex, 25s). Besides being an up-to-date and comprehensive review of perhaps the most difficult group of modern open- ings it contains a number of illustrative games. Recommended for young players who want to know the variations and old ones who want to understand the style. Here is one of the games, notes based on those by Keene.
White, Polugaievsky. Black, Maslov. Opening, King's Indian Attack. (Moscow, 1963.)

7 P -K 4 . the first contact of the forces. The absence of any direct threats is typical of this style of opening; the resulting freedom of action makes the game difficult for both players—there is so little to get hold of.

committal. A manoeuvre corresponding more fully to the demands of the position is 15 . . P x P; 16 R P X P. R -R 7; 17 B-B 3, Q- Kt 5! =.' Black, in fact, under- rates the force of White's coming King's-side attack; this is the kind of error of judgment which can decide a game of this type.
