. What has been called the Nancy incident seemed at

first likely to cause a most unpleasant situation between France and Germany. We are happy to learn, however, from Friday's telegrams that the newspaper polemics of Berlin are subsiding, and that the two Governments are treating what ii in reality a very paltry affair with good sense and good

temper. The French Government have not only acted with correctness throughout but with studied politeness and con- sideration. For example, they have prohibited the perform- ance at Nancy and at Lun6ville of a patriotic play dealing with espionage which has been running for some months at a Paris theatre, and was likely to be a cause of disturbance.
