Libya's role
Sir: Last week Mr Shalghem wrote that Colonel Gaddafi was misinterpreted by the press over Libya's "alleged involvement with terrorist groups." He said "The official Libyan attitude is that terrorism against innocent civil airline passengers . . . cannot be condoned."
Today several newspapers report that Greece has just released two Arab terrorists convicted of killing five people and wounding forty-eight at Athens airport last August. Libya was said to be the only Arab country which would accept these criminals. Libya was also the only Arab country which failed to condemn the massacre at Rome airport last December when thirty-one people were murdered and a hostage shot in cold blood by five Arab terrorists.
A year ago, Colonel Gaddafi himself stated in a newspaper interview that he was sending arms to the IRA — a subject of official complaint by the British Government.
Mr Shalghem must forgive newspapers and others for drawing their
Spectator May 18, 1974 own conclusions from such events will be interesting to see how far his assertions are validated by the Libyan treatment of the perpetrators of the Athens massacre.
