Thomas Cooper, the Hornsey footpad, was brought up for trial
at the Central Criminal Court today, charged with the wilful murder of Timothy Daly, a Policeman, with shooting at Charles Moss, a Police.. man, and with shooting at Charles Mott. He pleaded " Not Guilty." Moss and Mott were among the witnesses ; who proved how Cooper was seen following a gentleman to Hornsey Wood on the 5th May ; how Moss attempted to seize him, and was shot ; and bow Cooper fled to Highbury, and there shot and wounded Mott, as he stood at bay before he was seized. The defence was, that the prisoner was insane at the time he committed the murder ; a plea which his counsel, Mr. Horry, supported by alluding to his attempt at suicide. His mother, Isabella Cooper, deposed that he had a putrid fever when he was a year and eight months old, and since that he had been affected in his mind ; he showed an unnatural sleeplessness and disregard of pain, and had a ravenous appetite.
The Jury at a late hour returned a verdict of Guilty, and he was sentenced to death.
