The official Notes on Census-taking (C 6) are concise and
explicit, if marked here and there by a certain lack of humour as in the remark that one object of the age questions is to ascertain " whether the population as a whole is getting older or younger." They include a short bibliography, a history of census-taking and notes on instruction on the census in schools. Some of the directions for answering the questions about employment seem unduly complicated. We can imagine cases in which the official enumerator's task of explanation and help will be a difficult one. -
