Mr. John Wheatley The death of Mr. John Wheatley, M.P.,
on Monday, removes a commanding but somewhat disturbing figure from the Labour benches in the House of Commons. The ex-Minister of Health, as a Roman Catholic, no doubt had some rods in pickle for Sir Charles Trevelyan and the friends of the Government's new Education Bill. He was perhaps the most biting critic of Mr. Thomas. Tributes were paid to him on Tuesday in the House by all Parties, and it was decided that he should be given a public funeral. His colleagues, Mr. Maxton, Mr. Kirkwood, and Mr. Campbell Stephen have returned from the meeting of the Second International in Holland in order to be present.
