The result of the Pontefract election petition was the un-

seating of Mr. Reckitt, for an act of one of his agents, done, however, without Mr. Reckitt's knowledge. Mr. Justice Hawkins commented with great severity on the number of charges made without the smallest attempt to prove them. However, the bribery of Whittington by Draper was proved, and that made the election void. Mr. Reckitt cannot sit again for the same constituency at present ; but he is supporting the Gladstonian candidate for Pontefract in the approaching by-election.
